GW Golf Invitational Set for March 21-22

Tournament’s 19-Team Field to Battle for NCAA Bids

WASHINGTON, DC — The 10th annual George Washington Golf Invitational, hosted by The George Washington University, will be held Friday-Saturday, March 21-22, at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, DE.  Bear Trap Dunes is a par-72, 6,834-yard course.  The tournament will host several of the Northeast's top teams and several teams from this event aim to qualify for the NCAA Regionals in 2008 either as conference champions or as at-large selections..

The event will be contested over 54 holes with 27 holes played each day on the Grizzly and Kodiak nines.  The GW Invitational had been held at Swan Point Golf Club in Issue, MD, for seven straight years before moving to Bear Trap Dunes on the Delaware Shore two years ago.

Previous winners of the tournament returning to compete this year are Iona (2000), GW (2004) and Penn (2006, ‘07).  Seton Hall’s Kyle Morris will return to defend his title from each of the last two years.  GW’s top seven finishers will return as the Colonials will be fielding two teams in the event.

Five teams that have participated in recent NCAA tournaments highlight the field.  The host Colonials of George Washington earned an NCAA bid in 2006 after winning the event in 2004.  Last year, Maryland, Rhode Island, Penn, Bucknell and Monmouth all played in the NCAA Regionals and Penn's Chance Pepitone played in the NCAA finals.

Iona returns after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in 2000, ‘01 and ‘03 and participated in the 2000, ‘01 and ‘03 NCAA Championships.

Josh Freeman

JOSHUA MORDECAI FREEMAN

(July 27, 1964 – December 14, 2006)

We mourn the tragic loss of a great husband, father, businessman, community leader and friend. Joshua M. Freeman lived his life with kindness, generosity, gratitude, appreciation, love of learning, spirit, intelligence and wit…and will be missed by his beloved family, friends and colleagues.

Josh was born on July 27, 1964 and grew up at the family home, Tusculum Farm in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was a graduate of the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. Josh proudly served for three years as a Green Beret in the United States Army Special Forces.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Carl M. Freeman Companies, Josh Freeman led the company in carrying out its mission of building community – which he did at every point in his life. Josh began his career as a leasing agent and worked his way through the company learning both the business and the spirit of the organization from his father, founder Carl M. Freeman, to become President in 1992.

Under Josh’s leadership, the Freeman Companies have prospered and made significant contributions to the community in both Montgomery County, Maryland and in Sussex County, Delaware. Notable projects touched by Josh include Sea Colony, The Village at Bear Trap Dunes and Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club, The Cove, The Preserve, Bayside, Cabin John Shopping Center, Olney Village Center, The Historic Tidewater Inn and Coolfont. Companies led by Josh included First Republic Mortgage, Seacoast Realty, Atlantic Community Title and Bethany Partners.

Coupled with his professional dedication, Josh was a true philanthropist and leader in the community. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Carl M. Freeman Foundation, which supports local arts, social service, religious, and educational organizations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, he served on the Boards of Directors for Venture Philanthropy Partners, the Washington Capitals, the Washington National Opera, the United Jewish Endowment Fund, and was a member of the Board of Directors and Capital Campaign Co-Chairman for the Landon School.

In addition to leading the Freeman Companies, Josh was an organizer and member of the Board of Directors of Congressional Bank; founder of Bethany Partners, LLC, a private equity boutique; an investor in Lincoln Holdings LLC (the owner of the Washington Capitals, partial owner of the Washington Wizards and owner of various sports properties including the MCI Center). Josh was enrolled in the Harvard Business School Owner/President Management Program and held an honorary degree from Montgomery College. Despite his youth Josh’s outstanding achievements as a business leader and catalyst for change in the community were recognized with several honors. In 2005, he received the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce Lighthouse Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Community. Also in 2005, he was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and received the Southern Delaware Tourism Award for his significant contributions to the community. Prior to that, Josh was awarded the 2004 Marriott International, Inc. Arts and Humanities Corporate Patron Award for Excellence and the 2003 Howard J. Garber Memorial Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Greater Olney Civic Association. Also in 2003, he was included in “People to Watch – The Power 25: Delaware’s Most Influential People,” a feature by Delaware Today magazine.

Josh is survived by his loving wife Michelle, three children, his mother and three sisters – and countless family members, friends and admirers who cherished his loving, generous spirit.

He was buried with military honors at Tusculum Farm, his home located in Gaithersburg, Maryland on Sunday, December 17, 2006.

BAYSIDE RESORT GOLF CLUB DEBUTS DELAWARE’S FIRST JACK NICKLAUS SIGNATURE GOLF COURSE

Fenwick Island, Delaware, August 8, 2005--Bayside Resort Golf Club celebrated its grand opening on Monday, August 8th and ushered in a new era of golf in Southern Delaware, fulfilling expectations to be a stellar example of insightful land planning and golf course design.

Golf course architect Jack Nicklaus welcomed the challenge to create a course on a pristine piece of property that would reflect the natural setting of nearby Assawoman Bay.  The finished product, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, is a distinctive waterfront links layout that stays true to the natural composition of salt marshes, meadows and woodlands to present strategic and aesthetic shot values.  It is the centerpiece of a resort golf community on 867 acres that have been enhanced by four resort villages and private residences, along with markets, restaurants, boutiques and plaza.

“Today we see the fruit of the work,” said Nicklaus, on hand for the grand opening celebration and to play a special 18-hole exhibition, which attracted a gathering of nearly 1,000 -- made up of members, guests and dignitaries that included Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.).

Bayside’s challenging scale (7,545 from the Signature Tees) may be deceptive.  The golf course was never intended to be intimidating, or to overwhelm even average players.  The par-72 layout has five sets of tees, tapered to as little as 5,168 yards, without losing any of its aesthetic or strategic value.

“What you will find here,” Nicklaus said, “is that you will walk off the golf course and say, ‘I enjoyed that today.  What time can I get on tomorrow?”

The resort/semi-private course is accessible to members and guests of Bayside Resort.  Opening green fee is $160 per player in season, which includes a mandatory cart.  Public play also is available.

“We are so excited and honored to have Jack Nicklaus with us,” said Joshua M. Freeman, president and CEO of The Carl M. Freeman Companies.  “His focus and determination to create excellence is why we are so honored to have him.  By having Jack sign his name to this course, we partly are being a caretaker for his legacy. Hopefully we will be great caretakers of that legacy, as well as this being something we are proud of in our organization.”
